RSV infections in adults are roughly comparable to seasonal flu. Although their course is often mild, there are a number of risk factors for a severe course involving the lower respiratory tract – these include a weakened immune system as well as concomitant diseases of the heart, lungs or kidneys. In addition, studies have shown that adults over the age of 65 have an increased risk of a severe course of RSV infection, regardless of concomitant illnesses.
