According to recent findings, irritable bowel syndrome is one of the disorders of the gut-brain axis. Stress, intestinal permeability and inflammatory processes play an important role here. In clinical practice, a comprehensive diagnostic clarification is recommended in which the patient’s subjective disease models are included. In addition to symptom relief, non-pharmacological measures such as cognitive behavioral therapy are available.
